01 July 2011 – Tesco for Schools and Clubs national radio competition winners St Malachys Girls National School, The Friary, Anne Street, Dundalk, reveal their brand new state-of-the-art classroom.

Megan Maguire from ‘The Friary’ girls’ school, won Tesco’s national ‘Classroom Makeover’ radio competition as part of the annual Tesco for School and Clubs Scheme which ran from the 28th February to the 8th of May 2011.

Commenting on the new classroom Brid Galligan, Principal, said “We were so delighted when we heard of Megan’s fantastic win. We have wanted to makeover the 6th year’s classroom for a long time but needed the funds to do so. We would like to thank Tesco for their very generous prize which has allowed us completely refurbish and equip this classroom – giving us the best room in the school.”

Pat Halpin, Dunalk Store Manager, Tesco Ireland says,” At Tesco we understand that in today’s climate schools and clubs are finding it harder to get funding to improve their buildings and to get equipment. The Tesco for Schools and Clubs scheme is delighted to continue supporting local schools and clubs and to provide ‘The Friary’ girls school with a fantastic new classroom.”

The Scheme has given away over 400,000 pieces of equipment worth €16 million to Irish schools and clubs over the past 13 years. Last year alone, over €850,000 worth of school equipment and sports kit was delivered to schools and clubs around the country. This year they will exceed that amount with truckloads of deliveries of everything from sports gear and equipment to computers to educational and creative tools due to arrive at schools and clubs around the country from September on.
