Free events tackle safety issues facing senior citizens in Cork
Home Instead Senior Care Cork today announced the launch of a series of free ‘Senior Safety Information Events’ in Douglas, Midleton, Mayfield and Glanmire in May. With nearly 45,000 people over 65 in Cork and the number of Irish citizens aged over 75 set to double from 207,000 at present to 414,000 in the next 12 years, these inaugural events aim to ensure Cork’s aging population is not left vulnerable in their own homes. Topics covered will include safety in the home, community initiatives around safety (such as grants for personal alarms) and medication safety and compliance.
Senior citizens associations from across the city and county are supporting these events which will feature a panel of specialists including Noeleen Cronin and Mick O’Driscoll from Home Instead Senior Care Cork, Sheena Lynch of Lynch’s Pharmacy and Eleanor Bermingham of Senior Security and a local community Garda in each location.
Noeleen Cronin, Managing Director of Home Instead Senior Care, South Cork said “With the release of new CSO figures showing a dramatic rise in the age of our population, with the number over 65s reaching 1.4m by 2046, it is now more important than ever to ensure our elderly population can continue to live independently in their home. With crime against the elderly living alone increasing we need to ensure our senior citizens are not left vulnerable to opportunistic criminals. At these events we hope to educate the elderly and their families of assistance that is available in their local communities.”
The free events will take place in four locations including:
• Douglas, 14th of May 10.30am – 12.30pm at the Douglas GAA Hall,
• Midleton, 16th of May 2pm – 4pm at Midleton GAA Hall,
• Mayfield, 22nd of May 8pm – 10pm at Mayfield GAA Hall,
• Glanmire, 30th of May 10.30am – 12.30pm at Sarsfields GAA Hall.
Mick O’Driscoll, Managing Director of Home Instead Senior Care, North Cork said “We recognise the challenges facing senior citizens who wish to live at home independently. Security and personal wellbeing are of utmost importance and for this reason we have tailored our events to include experts from a variety of professions, all with the same aim of helping the ageing population of Cork.”
All are welcome to attend and there will be light refreshments served at each event. For more information please contact Home Instead Senior Care on 021 5002190
