Just over a year ago, Springboard Communications became a B Corp Certified business. At the time, we described certification as a milestone, not a final destination. Twelve months on, that view still holds true.

It has been about putting structure, accountability, and measurement around values we already held, and committing to doing them better. That means, now a year on, the most meaningful change hasn’t been a single initiative or policy. It has, instead, evolved how we think, plan and make decisions across the business.

From intention to discipline

Before B Corp, we had a strong sense of purpose. Like many growing agencies, we were already involved in community initiatives, working with charities, and sustainability efforts. However, B Corp’s framework has now given us discipline.

The B Impact Assessment forced us to examine areas we hadn’t previously interrogated in depth, like governance, environmental practices, supplier policies, employee wellbeing and how we measure impact. Some areas were stronger than we expected. Others needed work.

That process helped us move from good intentions to defined actions, backed by evidence and accountability.

Embedding sustainability into day-to-day work

Over the past year, sustainability has become part of how we operate.

We signed a Local Green Deal with Cork City Council, took practical steps to reduce our environmental footprint, and supported local initiatives such as clean-up efforts in the VQ (Victorian Quarter), which we will do again this year. Small actions, but intentional ones.

We also made conscious choices about how we work with clients. That includes supporting organisations that are helping Ireland transition to renewable energy, such as SE Systems, promoting sustainable tourism, and partnering with social impact organisations like Rethink Ireland

Purpose in partnership

One of the most valuable lessons from the past year has been the role of collaboration.

B Corp reinforced the fact that impact is not achieved in isolation. It involves employees, clients, suppliers and communities. We saw this through our annual Comms-a-thon with Down Syndrome Cork, through donations to organisations like Children’s Books Ireland, and ongoing conversations with clients who themselves are navigating sustainability.

Internally, it strengthened how we engage our own team – we’ve increased volunteering opportunities, implemented an employee health & wellbeing allowance, as well as including environmental considerations into performance and planning. These are all steps towards creating an even more enjoyable workplace for the whole team at Springboard.

Clarity over perfection

If there’s one insight that has stayed with us, it’s that progress matters more than perfection.

B Corp doesn’t ask organisations to have everything figured out. It asks them to measure honestly, act deliberately and commit to improvement. Over the past year, we’ve learned to be more open about what we’re working on and more confident in sharing what we’ve learned along the way.

That mindset has also informed our client work, particularly in sustainability communications, where transparency, credibility and clarity matter far more than polished claims.

Looking ahead

A year on, B Corp continues to act as both a compass and a challenge. It shapes decisions big and small, from who we partner with to how we define success as an agency.

We know there is more work to do. Certification is reassessed. Standards evolve. Expectations rise. That’s exactly the point.

For us, B Corp remains a practical framework for building a business that delivers strong communications, supports positive change, and holds itself accountable along the way.
